Can you imagine sending your children to school hungry?
“If you can’t feed 100 people, feed just one.”
Can you imagine sending your children to school hungry? Of course not, that doesn’t often happen in the US, but it happens for many poor children in Haiti, day after day. I often wonder how many children aren’t reaching their full potential because of a lack of nutrition, a lack of education, and thus, a lack of opportunity.
Sové Lavi (Saving Lives) has been supporting an elementary school in Pont Sondé, Haiti, near our medical clinic, for many years. Several years ago, we drilled a well at the school, Ecole Sacré Coeur Last year, we helped facilitate the construction of their new school with Digicel Foundation. This year, we have raised money for educational scholarships for 27 children because of the generosity of so many donors, for which we, Father Rémy, the director of the school, and the community are very grateful.
Now, we are helping the school develop a luncheon program for the 200 students, many of whom go to school with no food in their tummies and do not know if dinner will be awaiting them when they return home. As you know, a child cannot learn if they are hungry.
Feeding one child a proper meal of rice and beans costs $1 a day or $200 a year.
