Progress Report from my recent trip to Haiti

Dear Friends of Sové Lavi (Saving Lives),

Just a note to share with you the salient points of my recent visit to Haiti.

Clean Water/Well Drilling

I visited five new wells which were drilled during the month of January in partnership with the Friendship West Baptist Church of Dallas.
An additional 3,000 people will now have access to clean water and not be exposed to cholera and other water-borne diseases. Four additional wells will be drilled in February in partnership with Texas Baptist Men and other supporters. In conjunction with all of our partners, the community will have 30 wells. Our goal is to drill a total of 100 wells in the next two years.

In addition, we are exploring, with new partners, a water distribution system for the village which will include two reservoirs.

Cholera Prevention and Treatment

The good news is in our project area (Artibonite Valley where the cholera outbreak started) there are very few cases of cholera being reported.  However, several doctors and health officials I met with are still very concerned that another wave of the cholera virus may occur when the rainy season starts in May.

Every doctor and health official I met with said the top two priorities for the poor living in rural communities in Haiti are clean water and latrines.

Medical Clinic/Medical Mission

Our clinic continues to be active in treating patients. In addition, we are planning medical mission in partnership with the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical School in March.  We are also planning to increase staffing in case there is a recurrence of the cholera outbreak when the rainy season starts in May.

New School for Underprivileged Children

Another partner has committed to building a school for the underprivileged in the village. We expect the school to be built in time for several hundred underprivileged children to start this fall.

Because of you and your support, Sové Lavi continues to make a difference at the grassroots level for the poor in Haiti. If you wish to continue to support our initiatives, please check the Donation page for more information.

Sending thanks and blessings,
Dumas Siméus
